How to wash period underwear in 3 easy steps
Reusable period underwear can be washed by hand or in a washing machine. The important thing is to protect the absorbent layers: rinse in cold water, wash with a gentle detergent at no more than 30°C, and air dry. Always check your garment's care label in case it has more specific instructions.

How to wash period underwear step by step
You don't need specialist cleaning products or a complicated laundry routine. Just remove menstrual fluid before washing and avoid products or temperatures that could affect the technical fabric.
1. Rinse with cold water after wearing
Hold your period pants under cold running water and gently rinse the absorbent area until the water runs nearly clear. There's no need to scrub hard, wring the fabric or leave it soaking for hours. Hot water can make blood stains harder to remove.
2. Hand wash or machine wash at 30°C or below
Use a mild laundry detergent and cool or lukewarm water, keeping within Libertad Menstrual's recommended 30°C maximum. If you use a washing machine, choose a gentle cycle and preferably place the garment inside a protective laundry bag. Skip fabric softener, bleach and harsh stain removers.
3. Hang them up and let them dry completely
Air dry your period underwear in a well-ventilated spot, following the care label. Avoid tumble dryers, radiators and other sources of intense heat. The absorbent gusset may take longer to dry than the rest of the garment, so don't store or wear it while it's still damp.
Is it better to hand wash or machine wash period underwear?
Both methods work. Choose what suits your routine and the instructions on your garment's care label.
Hand washing
After the initial rinse, wash gently in cool water with a small amount of detergent. Rinse thoroughly to remove soap residue, then press out excess water carefully without twisting the fabric.
Machine washing
Once rinsed, place your underwear in a protective laundry bag and choose a gentle wash at 30°C or below with similar colours. Keep it away from items with Velcro or other fastenings that could snag the fabric.
Good to know: once rinsed, period underwear can go into a suitable mixed load. You don't need to run a separate washing machine cycle just for one pair.
Common washing mistakes and everyday solutions
- Fabric softener: it can leave a coating on fibres and reduce absorbency.
- Bleach or harsh stain removers: these may damage fabrics and functional finishes.
- Very hot water and tumble dryers: excess heat may affect elasticity and technical layers.
- Long soaking sessions: soaking is no substitute for rinsing and washing; don't leave garments sitting in water for hours.
- Putting underwear away while damp: this can encourage lingering odours. Make sure it is completely dry first.
What if a stain remains?
Rinse again in cold water and repeat a gentle wash if needed. Avoid bleach or vigorous scrubbing. A faint mark left after proper washing does not, by itself, mean your period underwear has stopped absorbing effectively.
What if I'm away from home?
If you can't rinse your underwear right away, keep the used pair temporarily in a waterproof travel bag. When you get home, take it out, rinse it and wash it as soon as possible. Don't leave a damp garment sealed away for long periods.
When should I replace my period underwear?
There's no single lifespan that applies to every pair: construction, wear and care all matter. Check for damaged seams or protective layers, leaks that didn't happen previously, or persistent odours despite proper washing and drying. These are signs that it's time to inspect the garment's condition.

Can I use fabric softener or stain remover?
It's best to avoid both, along with bleach. Use a mild detergent and follow the care instructions for the individual garment.
After washing
How long does period underwear take to dry?
Drying time depends on the fabric, airflow and humidity. The absorbent area often takes longer to dry. Make sure the garment is fully dry before wearing or storing it.
What should I do if my period underwear still smells after washing?
Check that it was rinsed thoroughly, wash it again according to the care label and allow it to dry completely. If the odour persists or the fabric appears damaged, inspect the garment before wearing it again.
Can I iron or tumble dry period underwear?
We don't recommend it. High heat can damage some of the functional materials. Air drying is the gentler option.
