Choosing guide · Period underwear

Your period changes. Your absorbency needs can change too.

To choose the right absorbency level for period underwear, start with how much you bleed that day and check the capacity of each style. As a guide, low absorbency suits light flow, medium suits moderate flow and high is intended for heavier days. Then check the fit and the extent of front and back coverage.

You don't have to wear the same level throughout your period. Many people rotate between styles as their flow changes. The best choice is the one that fits your actual flow, plans and opportunities to change.

The three absorbency levels in period underwear

At Libertad Menstrual you'll find low-, medium- and high-absorbency styles. The tampon comparisons shown on certain product pages are approximate capacity references: they don't promise a particular number of hours of wear, and they don't automatically apply to every reusable period product.

Light flow and spotting

Low absorbency

Intended for days with little bleeding, spotting, preventive wear or backup protection. It's also common in some period thongs and swimwear, although their individual capacities and uses need to be checked separately.

Approximate comparison where specified: around 2 tampons.

Moderate flow

Medium absorbency

An option for steady or moderate-flow days. It may work well at school, work or during everyday activities if the capacity matches your flow and you're able to change when needed.

Approximate comparison where specified: around 4 tampons.

Heavy flow

High absorbency

Designed for heavier bleeding days. It can also be useful overnight when paired with suitable coverage, but a higher capacity doesn't mean every high-absorbency pair protects the same area.

Approximate comparison where specified: around 6 tampons.

Important: the 2-, 4- and 6-tampon comparisons are references used for specified Libertad Menstrual styles. They aren't universal measurements across brands or formats, and they don't tell you how many hours you can safely wear a pair before changing it.

Which absorbency level should you choose for your day?

A particular day of your cycle doesn't automatically mean a certain flow level. Early days may be heavy and later days lighter, but everyone's pattern is different. Use these scenarios as a starting point.

Light-flow days

Starting point: low. For spotting and lighter days, or when you'd like backup protection.

School or work

Starting point: medium for moderate flow. Plan when you can change; don't choose solely based on hours away from home.

Heavier days

Starting point: high. Greater capacity may help, but you may need more changes or backup protection.

Overnight

Depending on flow: medium or high. Look at how far the absorbent panel extends, especially at the back.

Exercise

Match your usual flow. Also choose a suitable sports style with the fit and coverage you need.

Pool or beach

Specialist swimwear. Some period swimwear styles are low or medium absorbency; check each product page.

Absorbency, coverage and size are three different choices

High absorbency doesn't always mean a larger protective area. Before choosing a pair, check these three details:

  1. Absorbent capacity: how much flow the technical gusset is designed to hold.
  2. Coverage: how far protection extends at the front and back, particularly important for sleeping or movement.
  3. Size and fit: the underwear should stay in place without uncomfortable pressure or gaps around the leg openings.

How many hours will it last? There is no one-size-fits-all answer. Change when the garment feels damp, heavy, uncomfortable or close to its capacity. Learning your flow and trying different absorbency levels can help you plan changes.

What if you're between two levels?

Think about the day you'll wear it and compare product pages. If you're new to period underwear, start with a style suited to your flow and see how it performs on a day when changing is easy. You can then rotate between absorbency levels throughout your cycle.

Period thongs, pantyliners, reusable pads and period swimwear have different constructions and uses: don't assume the capacity of one format applies to another, even if their icons look similar.

Frequently asked questions about period underwear absorbency

Choosing a level

What do Libertad Menstrual's absorbency icons mean?

They visually identify whether a style has low, medium or high absorbency. Check the product page for its specific capacity, coverage and recommended use.

What's the difference between medium and high absorbency?

Within the relevant scale, high absorbency is intended to hold more flow than medium. Choose according to your bleeding, not just how long you'll be out.

Does a 4- or 6-tampon comparison mean all-day protection?

No. It's a capacity reference for certain products, not a guaranteed wear time. Actual wear time varies with your flow and the garment; change whenever you need to.

Specific situations

Do I always need high absorbency overnight?

Not necessarily. It depends on your night-time flow. Check the back coverage and put on a clean pair before bed.

Can I wear low absorbency for exercise?

Yes, if your flow is light and the style is suitable for the activity. For heavier flow, consider another capacity and check fit and coverage.

Can I swim in high-absorbency period underwear?

High absorbency alone doesn't make underwear suitable for swimming. For the pool or beach, choose period swimwear designed for water and suited to the flow specified for that style.

Can I use different absorbency levels during the same period?

Yes. Rotating between levels is a practical way to match lighter, moderate and heavier days, provided each style is used within its intended capacity.
